London Travel Chaos: Blackwall & Rotherhithe Tunnel Closures - LIVE Updates! (2025)

Londoners, brace yourselves! Today's travel updates paint a picture of significant disruption across the city, making your commute a real challenge. Let's dive into the details, shall we?

Firstly, both the Blackwall and Rotherhithe Tunnels are experiencing heavy congestion due to technical issues affecting traffic cameras. This is causing major headaches for drivers. According to the AA, the northbound Blackwall Tunnel, heading from Greenwich towards Poplar, faced severe delays due to early morning closures. The knock-on effects are being felt far and wide.

Specifically, the A2 is experiencing heavy traffic, with queues stretching from Kidbrooke, across Blackheath and Trafalgar Road into Greenwich, as well as on the Lower Lea Crossing from Silvertown. Thankfully, the southbound side of the Blackwall Tunnel reopened shortly before 7 am.

But that's not all! The Hanger Lane Tunnel has reopened eastbound, and while traffic is flowing better, delays persist, with tailbacks extending to the M25. The A312 is slow approaching the A40. Furthermore, southbound traffic on the A406 is slow with tailbacks to Neasden, and northbound traffic on the A406 North Circular Road is slow from Popes Lane. Westbound traffic is also slow on the A40 Western Avenue from Savoy Circus. Expect delays on all approaches to the Hanger Lane Gyratory.

West Ealing Railway station will be closing early, at 22:52 each evening. The last trains will depart at 22:35 (from Heathrow Terminal 4 to Abbey Wood) and 22:50 (from Abbey Wood to Heathrow Terminal 5). Passengers are advised to use local London Buses services. Similarly, Acton Main Rail station will also close early, at 22:47 each evening. The last trains will call at 22:40 (from Heathrow Terminal 4 to Abbey Wood) and 22:45 (from Abbey Wood to Heathrow Terminal 5). Again, local London Buses services are recommended.

Train travelers, be aware: a fault with the signalling system in the Hampden Park area means trains running between Eastbourne and Hampden Park may be delayed by up to 15 minutes, cancelled, or revised, with disruption expected until 3 pm.

The Rotherhithe Tunnel remains closed, causing congestion on the A13 from Poplar, while traffic from Jamaica Road is being diverted into the city via Bermondsey.

Additionally, there's a part closure on the Metropolitan line – no service between Baker Street and Aldgate due to a track fault at Baker Street. Passengers should use the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines.

Southampton Central is experiencing residual disruption, with a speed restriction over defective track, causing fewer trains to run. Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 15 minutes, or revised, with disruption expected until 1 pm. Impacted routes include South Western Railway services between London Waterloo and Bournemouth / Poole / Southampton Central / Weymouth, between Winchester and Bournemouth / Poole, between Fareham / Portsmouth & Southsea / Portsmouth Harbour / Winchester and Southampton Central, and also between Salisbury and Romsey.

Finally, traffic is slow-moving on Streatham High Road in both directions. Northbound tailbacks are occurring after Streatham Common, and southbound from Leigham Avenue. Expect delays in the area.

The closure of the tunnels is still causing disruption in the area.
